Sunrise rocked by allegation of "fraud"

Sunrise and the Seven Network have been rocked by an investigation by their biggest competitor, who exposed both allegations of "fraud", as well as threatening emails to a young journalist at Nine who was chasing the story.

The scandal began when a reporter for the Sydney Morning Herald was alerted to an investigation being conducted by an independent law firm into the Sunrise program.

According to reports by Nine, the law firm began an investigation, which was also conducted by a financial and corporate auditor, into reports that Sunrise staff members had grossly misused travel benefits.

The allegations claimed that a small number of Sunrise staffers, as well as some of their friends and family, had taken flights and stayed in hotels on trips not related to their work duties, using benefits provided to the network by Qantas as part of a multimillion-dollar advertising and sponsorship deal.

When business reporter for the Australian Financial Review Zoe Samios, a publication owned by Nine, reached out to Seven’s long-time commercial director Bruce McWilliam to chase the story, she was allegedly met with threatening emails saying her probes into the allegations had caused Seven’s star executive producer Michael Pell to self-harm.

“This is what your unfounded reports have caused Michael to do,” Mr McWilliam wrote to Ms Samios in October last year.

Attached to the email was a graphic image of him, bloodied and in a hospital gown, with a noticeable head wound.

“Why don’t you keep it up so he kills himself. You are a complete disgrace. That law firm you name didn’t conduct any investigation. If you publish untrue allegations … and he tops himself. It’s on you. We are determined to protect him,” the email read.

Speaking exclusively to news.com.au on Thursday as the investigations were made public for the first time, Mr McWilliam defended the email and said he was defending a colleague and “friend” against “false allegations”.

However, several months before the email, Mr Pell had stepped down as the boss of Sunrise and was appointed Seven's Senior Vice President of Entertainment Content in North America, and he moved to Los Angeles shortly after.

On Thursday, Mr McWilliam told news.com.au that he became incensed when Mr Pell’s name was linked to the investigation, prompting his fiery email to Samios.

“The accusations against Michael were exaggerated,” he told news.com.au.

“I make no excuse for having acted to protect a colleague, against whom false allegations were being made. Michael Pell has been a friend of mine for many years.”

The newspaper subsequently agreed to kill the story over concerns for Mr Pell’s mental health and wellbeing.

While the findings of the alleged expenses investigation were delivered to Seven and described as "serious", a source close to the investigation insists that while the accusations are significant, they do not constitute "fraud" in the legal sense.

Despite that, it’s understood that a small number of staff left the network following the findings being delivered to Seven, with the staffers signing nondisclosure agreements upon their departure.

The scandal's reemergence comes 18 moths after the initial allegations, as Seven finds itself in another controversy over its flagship current affairs program Spotlight and its handling of an exclusive interview with Bruce Lehrmann.

Lisa Wilkinson sues Channel Ten

Australian television personality Lisa Wilkinson is taking legal action against her former employer, Network 10, in a dispute that revolves around an alleged breach of agreement concerning the payment of legal costs incurred in their ongoing defamation case initiated by Bruce Lehrmann.

According to a recent report by The Daily Telegraph, Network 10 is refusing to cover two invoices totalling $723,000 for legal services that Wilkinson acquired when she hired prominent barrister Sue Chrysanthou SC and Gillis Delaney Lawyers partner Anthony Jefferies earlier this year.

This decision by Wilkinson to engage her legal team instead of utilising Network 10's retained law firm, Thomson Geer, appears to be at the heart of the dispute.

Wilkinson, a well-known media figure in Australia, left The Project in November 2022, citing being subjected to "targeted toxicity". This departure marked the beginning of a series of legal and professional challenges that have now culminated in her suing Network 10 in the New South Wales Supreme Court.

Wilkinson's legal action claims that Network 10 had accepted liability to indemnify her in the defamation case, regardless of whether she chose to be "independently represented" or not. Network 10 has responded to these allegations by emphasising the importance of due process in justifying the substantial legal invoices. They expressed that their primary focus remains on defending the defamation suit brought by Bruce Lehrmann.

Lehrmann is suing Network 10, Lisa Wilkinson, and the ABC for defamation in connection with their reporting of a sexual assault allegation made by Brittany Higgins in 2019. Lehrmann alleges that Wilkinson's interview with Higgins on The Project, which aired on February 15, 2021, conveyed a series of defamatory meanings, including the accusation that he had raped Higgins in then-defense industry minister Linda Reynolds' office in 2019. Despite the legal challenges, Wilkinson's interview with Higgins garnered critical acclaim, earning her two Walkley Award nominations and a Logie Award.

After her departure from The Project, Paramount Australia executive vice president Beverley McGarvey indicated that they had plans for Wilkinson's future, expressing optimism about continuing their relationship with the renowned journalist. However, Wilkinson has not been seen on air since then, and her contractual obligations with Network 10 are reported to extend into the next year, with a deal rumoured to be worth seven figures.

Images: Instagram

Channel 10 newsreader admits to driving while four times over the legal limit

Natasha Exelby, a well-known journalist and former Channel 10 newsreader, recently found herself in the spotlight for an entirely different reason than her on-air mishap in 2017.

On a fateful day last June, she was involved in a drink driving incident in Toorak, Melbourne. This incident marked a low point in her life, but it also sheds light on the profound impact of mental health struggles and the road to recovery.

Exelby, 34, appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court and made a candid admission: she had driven while suspended and under the influence of alcohol, registering a blood alcohol concentration of .220, over four times the legal limit. She narrowly escaped conviction but didn't escape the consequences of her actions.

In her statement to the Herald Sun, Exelby took full responsibility for her actions, citing her ongoing battle with major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. She courageously acknowledged her struggles and the role they played in her regrettable choices that day.

"It's no secret that I've suffered from major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder for many years," she said. "At the time of the incident, I was going through a very dark period with multiple medication changes. Never in my life did I think I would be capable of what happened but regardless of my mental health, my actions were shocking beyond words and I take full responsibility."

Her journey towards this dark moment was marked by openness about her mental health. In September 2022, she appeared on Studio 10, where she revealed the depths of her internal battles. She discussed experiencing episodes of inexplicable crying, a common symptom of depression. This revelation was crucial in the context of R U OK? Day, emphasizing the importance of checking on the well-being of those around us.

Natasha's admission serves as a stark reminder that mental health issues are every bit as valid as physical ailments. She compared her experience with depression to "drowning" and disclosed that she had been on medication and in therapy for major depression for years. Her message is clear: it's okay to seek help when battling these internal demons, and recovery is possible, even if it's a long and winding road.

Exelby's struggle with mental health is by no means a recent development. She revealed that she had been dealing with major depression since the age of 15, highlighting the enduring nature of the condition. Her story is an inspiration for others who are going through similar challenges, proving that there is light at the end of the tunnel, even when it feels like the journey will never end.

Before her battle with depression and her recent legal troubles, Exelby made headlines in 2017 for an on-air gaffe during an ABC news broadcast. Despite the initial shock, she took the incident in stride, even finding humour in it and acknowledging the role that social media and celebrities like Russell Crowe played in making the video go viral. It was a moment of resilience and self-awareness that foreshadowed her future ability to face her own mental health struggles.

Exelby's open honesty, her admission of her mistakes and her ongoing battle with mental health challenges is a reminder that anyone can face difficulties, regardless of their public persona. By sharing her experiences, Exelby is contributing to the ongoing conversation about mental health, helping to break down the stigma that often surrounds it.

Images: Instagram

“Rougher than sandpaper gate”: Warnie series a swing and a miss with fans

Since Channel 9’s Warnie series was first announced, Australians have been sceptical, with some dubbing it “embarrassing and disgraceful” after the trailer was revealed as they called for television networks to “let him rest in peace”.

And now, the first episode of the two-part miniseries has gone to air, and fans of the late cricket legend Shane Warne have wasted no time in making their thoughts clear.

The episode detailed everything from Warne’s 1999 West Indies experience - when he was dropped from the team - to the start of his career, his St Kilda delisting, his rise and fall with the Australian team, the ‘Ball of the Century’, the diuretic scandal and his 2003 ban, and the John Bookmaker scandal.

Warne’s personal life wasn’t off the cards, either, with the episode also dipping into his romance with then-wife Simone Callahan.

It was enough ‘plot’ for hours of viewing, but while Warnie was a beloved fixture of Australian - and even international - sport, the series missed the mark, and prompted critics on social media to share their take, and warn anyone else from daring a watch.

“Shane Warne would be embarrassed!!” a Twitter user announced. “And so should channel 9 and anyone involved in this”.

“This is really good if you take out the actors and script and just look at the archive footage,” one allowed.

“I am shocked I made it through the first 45 minutes [of] quite possibly the worst tv show produced by @Channel9,” another said, before going on to note that it had been some of the “worst casting, acting and make up of any show ever”.

Another was annoyed that while the Warnie series had hit 9’s main channel, the Women’s Ashes had been pushed aside, a move raising eyebrows from the online cricket community.

“Just a reminder, the women’s #Ashes Test which is set to go down to the wire is on one of Nine’s secondary channels while #Warnie gets the main channel treatment,” wrote CODE Sports’ Lachlan McKirdy, who also mentioned that the same would never have happened to the Men’s Ashes series.

“#Warnie was predictably terrible, and not just because it was hopelessly cheesy. You need distance in the rear view mirror before a thing like this can work. We all know the stories, the moments, the guy's character. 20 years on, it would've been a fantastic trip down memory lane,” author Anthony Sharwood lamented.

“I’ve had enough. This is an absolute disgrace and is tarnishing a legend of the game. It should have never seen the light of day. Shame on you @Channel9,” one other user said.

One watcher, however, was at least willing to give the second episode a chance, sharing that “This #warnie series on 9 is already highly cringeworthy, poorly directed, and rougher than sandpaper gate. Warnie and Packer sitting somewhere highly bemused. I'll keep watching, see if it improves”.

Images: Screentime, Channel 9

Why Channel 10 is suing its former star host

Channel 10 is suing its former political editor, Peter van Onselen, for an alleged breach of contract after he wrote a column tearing into his former employer’s business skills.

Anonymous sources told news.com.au that Mr van Onselen signed a non-disparagement clause and received a financial settlement after leaving the network.

He had announced he was returning to academia, leaving his daily political news role at Ten in March 2023 after four years. It followed reports he had become tired of the commute from Sydney to Canberra.

“I’ve only been doing this for four years ... We sometimes forget the sacrifices they make!” he wrote.

It’s believed that the alleged breach of contract that Ten Network has initiated action over relates to that secret clause, which required him not to badmouth the network.

However, it’s now the court’s decision to decide whether his column — which only referred to publicly available information about the network — constitutes a breach, or whether he should be free to make such observations in his role as commentator.

In The Australian on May 25, Mr van Onselen wrote that Ten’s parent company, Paramount, was unlikely to have a promising future.

“Paramount’s share price has plummeted more than 30 per cent in the past month, down more than 50 per cent in just a year,” he wrote.

“You could choose to be a little more upbeat about Paramount (and Network 10’s) future if the streaming part of the business was firing, but it’s not.

“So what does all of this mean for Network 10? “Let him rest in peace”: Viewers slam Shane Warne miniseries

Viewers have slammed Channel Nine’s upcoming miniseries on Shane Warne, calling the “major drama” two-part event “embarrassing and disgraceful”.

The first promo ads for the miniseries aired during the first State of Origin game on Wednesday night, with the trailer showing actor Alex William depicting the late Australian cricketer.

The trailer was not well received by fans, with many saying it is “too soon” to be making a series about his life and death.

Warmie died in March 2022 of a suspected heart attack while on holiday in Thailand.

Just six months after his passing, the Nine Network confirmed the miniseries was in production, however, they did not disclose at the time that production began just three weeks after his death.

The series, called Warnie, is set to air over two nights later this year.

After the first trailer aired, many fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment over the show.

One disgruntled viewer wrote, “Are Channel Nine taking the piss with the Warnie mini series. That promo was s***house, embarrassing and disgraceful. Let him rest in peace.”

Another wrote, “Does anyone else think it’s too soon for a Warnie show on? He hasn’t even been gone for 15 months, and already the show seems filmed and ready to release.”

“How quickly after his passing did someone go ‘yep it’s time to make a show on his life?’”

A third person put it simply: “On the YeahNah scale the Warnie TV drama series look like a massive nah.”

The miniseries was filmed in the late cricketer's hometown of Melbourne, and tells a dramatised version of Warnie's remarkable sporting career and rise to fame.

Shane's eldest daughter Brooke, 24, previously called Nine's announcement of a telemovie based on her father “beyond disrespectful”, as he spent 23 years as a commentator for the network's cricket coverage.

“Do any of you have any respect for dad? Or his family?” she wrote on Instagram.

“He did so much for Channel Nine and now you want to dramatise his life and our family's life six months after he passed away? You are beyond disrespectful.”

Larry Emdur celebrates overwhelming success of The Chase

The Aussie game show The Chase has achieved overwhelming success, with the series recently receiving the highest ratings out of every entertainment show on TV.

The show, hosted by Larry Emdur, appeared on Seven in 2015, and consistently rises above its direct rival, Nine’s Hot Seat with Eddie McGuire, proving victorious in 2022 after winning 40 weeks with a total audience of 829,000.

By May 23, it attracted the largest audience of all TV entertainment programs, including those in the 7:30pm prime time slot.

The Chase, which airs at 5pm, saw a staggering 567,000 viewers across the five-city metro rankings on May 23, well ahead of Hot Seat, which raked in 408,000.

It also beat some of the other prime time broadcasts, including Ten’s MasterChef Australia, which aired to 427,000 households. Seven’s Highway Patrol that received 350,000, ABC’s 7:30 report which came in at 438,000 and Nine’s new reality show The Summit, which had 395,000 viewers.

Additionally, The Chase trumped The Project, which aired at 7pm to 307,000 viewers. The only programs that were ahead of The Chase were the Seven and Nine early evening news bulletins and A Current Affair.

Emdur, who took over on the show in 2021 after former host Andrew O’Keefe’s contract wasn’t renewed, celebrated the show’s huge win on Instagram.

He shared a photo of his TV screen showing one of the Chasers, ‘The Governess’ Anne Hegerty, and thanked fans of the show for tuning in each afternoon.

“Thank you for making The Chase the number 1 Entertainment show in Australia [Tuesday] night,” he wrote.

“We had a bigger audience between 5-6pm than the big dogs in prime time, that makes me a very proud old game show host bimbo.”

And its success over the “big dogs” wasn’t a one-off, with The Chase once again trumping the ratings over prime time programs on May 25 with 543,000 viewers, ahead of MasterChef (390,000), Nine’s NRL coverage (338,000) and Home And Away (451,000).

The show’s success comes amid reports that channel Nine is testing new formats in its 5pm slot to bump up the competition.

In April, the network denied rumours that Hot Seat was being cut, despite putting out casting calls for new game shows.

The series started airing in 2009 as a spin-off of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? which McGuire also hosted from 1999 until 2006.

However, a recent casting call fuelled rumours Hot Seat could be axed to make way for a local version of the hit UK game show Tipping Point, which airs on Nine at 3pm.

An official call-out from Endemol Shine Australia, the production company that makes Tipping Point, was released on Twitter in April, revealing the show was filming “Australian episodes” in the UK.

A move to record local episodes of Tipping Point follows similar plans from Nine to make Aussie episodes of US quiz show Jeopardy!

The network confirmed in April that British comedian Stephen Fry would host a six-part special featuring Australian contestants. Production is currently underway in Manchester, UK.

TV Blackbox editor Robert McKnight suggested the new program offerings from Nine could become a temporary “stunt” in Hot Seat’s time slot to “test the waters” among viewers.

Channel Nine addresses rumours of "tension" on Today set

Channel Nine has addressed rumours of tension and anxiety on the set of Today, with the relationship between hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo reportedly being strained.

According to reports to New Idea, Stefanovic and Abo have been at odds over a reported $700,000 pay gap, with Karl reportedly earning $1.5million a year for his hosting duties while Abo brings home $800,000 a year.

Despite the rumours of "tension" over the six-figure pay gap, Nine's director of morning television Steven Burling told news.com.au that the rumours are "not even remotely correct".

"The salary figures for our network talent published last week in various outlets were not even remotely correct. Anyone who watches Today can confirm there's absolutely no tension on set," Mr Burling said.

"We couldn't be happier with our talented line-up of Karl, Sarah, Brooke, Alex and Tim who are working well and having a great time - end of story."

The statement comes after New Idea spoke to a source allegedly close to the show, who said the news of the pay gap was "anxiety inducing" for new host Sarah, who took over from Ally Langdon in January.

"The news of Karl's big pay cheque is anxiety inducing to say the least... Some are wondering why she isn't being more equally matched with Karl," a source allegedly said.

"If you were Sarah would you stay and put on a smile every day knowing full well you're being paid so much less than your male counterpart for doing the same job? I can imagine she's likely disappointed."

Ten slams “misleading” Masterchef rumours

Channel 10 have put an end to rumours surrounding the next season of Masterchef Australia, in the wake of false reports circling that they were on the hunt for a new judge.

In the wake of chef Jock Zonfrillo’s passing, rumours have circulated that the network was looking for a replacement. And according to a report from the Daily Mail, they even had a few frontrunners in mind.

The publication claimed that no well-known chef was off the cards, and that while it was a “sombre” affair, an insider had informed them that conversations had begun, despite their ongoing grieving process.

Their insider reportedly stated that the final decision would come down to on-screen chemistry, not existing popularity, as “that really earned Jock the position originally”.

They suggested that Zonfrillo had been “a dark horse”, but that his chemistry with fellow judges Melissa Leong and Andy Allen had been what won everyone over, and that “the new host will need that more than anything”.

The Daily Mail went on to list their reported shortlist of contenders for the position, from the likes of former Masterchef stars Dan Churchill and Hayden Quinn, author Danielle Alvarez, Hugh Allen, Josh Niland, Joel Bickford, Alessandro Pavoni, and Jordan Toft.

Their most notable, however, was Poh Ling Yeow, who had made a return to the series a few nights prior.

However, as Channel 10 have informed news.com.au, none of this is true.

“Casting for the next season of Masterchef Australia has not commenced,” a spokesperson for the network declared. “To suggest otherwise is completely false and misleading.”

Zonfrillo, as well as Leong and Allen, had only joined the cast of Masterchef in 2019. Their line-up marked a significant change for the series, with former longtime judges Matt Preston, George Calombaris, and Gary Mehigan exiting the hit cooking competition after nearly a decade at the helm.

And although they hadn’t possessed the same public profile as the former batch, Zonfrillo and his fellow judges had proven a major success with viewers, with the show powering on in the ratings realm.

The 2023 season - Zonfrillo’s last - had welcomed strong viewership for the network as well, and while many may continue to speculate about the following season, Channel 10 remain firm that pre-production will not get underway until much later in 2023.

Images: Masterchef Australia / Ten
